Updating details in building designs more quickly
The transfer of more detailed information to the design data models of buildings is currently slow and it may lead to errors. Architects NRT is developing a process that allows more details to be added to building designs as quickly as possible during the construction stage.
What kind of problem is this project trying to solve?
The current, developing technology allows control measurements to be performed fairly quickly and efficiently during the construction stage at renovation sites. Control measurements refer to measurements used to ensure the feasibility and quality of building designs. They provide more reliable information than designs on demolished and previously hidden framework structures, for example.
Processing large point cloud data sets and exporting them to the design model of a building, however, is labour-intensive and requires very high design and modelling expertise. Therefore, it is difficult to prepare for such a task in advance, as construction projects are usually unique and complex. A slow work process and a lack of accuracy in designs have a critical impact on the feasibility and reliability of designs, slowing down the entire construction process and possibly leading to errors.
Objective: updating designs more quickly with more detailed information on buildings
We are developing a new kind of process that allows more detailed point cloud data to be processed and modelled as quickly as possible during the construction stage. The project experiments with more streamlined ways of combining controlled starting data with design models.
The work process is being tested and validated iteratively in a real operating environment in three basic renovation projects: Helsinki Olympic Stadium, Kivimies school and daycare centre, and Finlandia Hall. The objective is to find, through experimental development, a work process that enables more detailed information to be added to design data models quickly, easily and flexibly.
The project will be carried out in stages in which the complexity of the experiment is gradually increased. Every stage will utilise the point cloud and design data generated in the projects.
