Transferring data on the road and street network condition
Ramboll Oy and the City of Espoo tested how data on the road and street network can be transferred in a shared system ecosystem.
What kind of problem is the project trying to solve?
The data used by cities and design offices on the condition of the road and street networks does not yet move smoothly between the parties. When data is transferred from one user to another, a massive amount of measurement data must be moved using memory sticks or portable hard disks. The required data is in a form that is difficult to use and manual work is required before it is usable.
Objective: “Transferring data directly to the customer's system through interfaces”
In an ideal situation, the information systems of the parties would work together seamlessly and large data masses would be transferred through interfaces from the design office directly into the system maintaining the city's infrastructure assets and integrated to it.
What was done in the project?
The experimental project of Ramboll Finland Oy and the City of Espoo created a system ecosystem based on open source code for the service provider and the customer. In the ecosystem, data is transferred in a machine-readable form between the information systems of the parties. The project tested the functioning of the data transfer and the processing of the material.
What were the outcomes of the experiment?
The project created a well-functioning system ecosystem, the model of which can be copied and used by other cities. The system enhances the processes of the city's infrastructure asset management, creates savings and improves the quality of the data used. Efficient transfer of data saves time for all parties.
Who benefits?
The system ecosystem benefits both the design office and the city. The operating model can be applied for several purposes and the model can be used nationwide.
